How to Link Search Console to GA4 (and What You Actually Get)

Short answer: To link Search Console to GA4, open GA4 Admin, go to Product links, then Search Console Links, click Link, pick your Search Console property and your web data stream, and submit. Then open the Reports Library and publish the Search Console collection, because it stays hidden until you do. You need the Editor role in GA4 and verified owner status in Search Console.

The fifth step is the one that wastes people's afternoons. You finish the link, GA4 shows a pleasant confirmation, and then you go looking for the new reports and find nothing. No error, no message. The link has worked perfectly, and the reports are sitting in a collection that Google leaves unpublished by default.

It takes about five minutes end to end if your access is in order. This guide covers the steps, the hidden step, and the part most tutorials skip: what the link will not do, so you know when you need something else.

Before you start: the two permissions that stop most people

Two things must be true, and they often sit with different people in a small company.

  • In GA4: you hold the Editor role on the property. Viewer and Analyst are not enough.
  • In Search Console: you are a verified owner of the property, not only a full user. If you have never set this up, follow our guide on how to set up Google Search Console from scratch.

Here is how this usually plays out. A web developer verified Search Console three years ago with their own account, and a marketing manager runs GA4. Neither can finish the job alone. Sort out ownership first, since it is the only part of this process that can take days.

Linking them, step by step

  1. Open Admin in GA4. Click the gear icon at the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Go to Product links. Choose Search Console Links, then click Link.
  3. Choose accounts. Click Choose accounts and select the Search Console property. Only properties where you are a verified owner will appear.
  4. Select the web stream. Pick the data stream for this website, then click Next and Submit.
  5. Publish the reports. In the Reports section, open Library at the bottom of the left menu. Find the Search Console collection, open its menu and choose Publish. It will now appear in your reports menu.

Then wait. Search Console data shows up in GA4 48 hours after Search Console collects it, so an empty report on the first morning is normal.

What you get: two reports, one useful join

The link adds two reports. Google Organic Search Queries lists the searches that brought people in. Google Organic Search Traffic lists landing pages with Search Console and GA4 metrics together.

The second report is the valuable one. Imagine a page with 900 clicks from Google and a healthy position of 4. In Search Console alone, that page looks like a winner. In the Traffic report you might see that those visitors almost never reach a key event. Now picture a page with 60 clicks that produces four enquiries a week. Search Console alone would tell you to ignore it. Joined together, the numbers say the opposite: protect the small page and fix the big one.

That join of "how they arrived" with "what they did" is the reason to link at all. It also gives you a place to compare the tools when their numbers do not match.

This is where expectations and reality part ways. These limits come straight from Google's integration page.

LimitWhat it means for you
Only 3 compatible dimensionsLanding page, device and country work with Search Console metrics. You cannot break queries down by GA4 channel, audience or event.
No time-series chartsYou see summary tables, so spotting a trend means going back to Search Console.
48-hour delayFine for monthly reviews, weak for checking a fix you made this morning.
16 months of historySearch Console keeps no more than that, so older data needs a bulk export.
One link onlyOne web stream links to one Search Console property, and the reverse.
Links cannot be editedTo change anything, delete the link and create it again.

There is one more catch for query data. GA4 applies data thresholds to rows with search query information when there are too few users, and those thresholds cannot be adjusted. Search Console itself leaves rare queries out of its table as anonymized queries, so low-volume terms can be missing even though they count in the totals.

A domain property in Search Console covers all subdomains and protocols, while a URL-prefix property covers just one version of your site. If your site runs on one version only, either type will work, though a domain property is harder to get wrong.

For a monthly look at landing pages, the native link is fine, and it costs nothing. You will feel its limits the first time you want to see a trend, compare two periods side by side, or answer a question like "which pages lost clicks while still getting enquiries?"

You have three ways forward. Google's own suggestion is a Looker Studio dashboard or BigQuery bulk exports, which are powerful and need someone to maintain them. The second way is a ready-made dashboard. ONE Dashboard connects to both tools with read-only access and shows them together in plain English, with period comparisons and no setup of reports. You sign up, approve Google's consent screen, and pick your property and site. The third way is to ask an AI assistant directly through a read-only MCP connection.

None of these replace the native link, and they do not conflict with it. Set it up anyway. It takes five minutes and gives every future GA4 user on your account a useful report.

Five minutes now, one honest report for years

Do the link today, publish the collection, and put a reminder in your calendar for 48 hours from now. Open the Traffic report that day and look for the page with the most clicks and the fewest key events. That page is your first project. If your key events show numbers that seem too good, read this before you trust them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I link Search Console to GA4?

In GA4, go to Admin, then Product links, then Search Console Links, and click Link. Choose your Search Console property, choose your web data stream, then submit. Finally open Library in Reports and publish the Search Console collection, because it is unpublished by default.

What permissions do I need to link Search Console to GA4?

You need the Editor role on the GA4 property and you must be a verified owner of the Search Console property. A Search Console user who is not a verified owner cannot create the link. Either get owner access or ask the verified owner to create the link for you.

Why is Search Console data not showing in GA4?

The usual reason is that the Search Console collection has not been published in the Reports Library. The second most common reason is timing, because data appears 48 hours after Search Console collects it. Also check that you linked the correct web data stream.

Can I link one Search Console property to two GA4 properties?

No. One web data stream can link to one Search Console property, and the reverse also applies. A GA4 property can have only one such link. To change a link you must delete it and create a new one, because links cannot be edited.

How much Search Console history appears in GA4?

Up to 16 months, because that is how long Search Console keeps the data. The linked reports show summary tables only, with no time-series charts, and only landing page, device and country work with Search Console metrics.
