How to Track AI Traffic in GA4: ChatGPT, Gemini and What Stays Hidden

Short answer: To track AI traffic in GA4, open Traffic acquisition and find the AI Assistant row in the default channel group, then switch to session source to see ChatGPT, Gemini and others by name. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode under Organic Search, so those visits are not in that row. Some AI visits also arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, so treat the figure as a minimum.

We assumed AI assistants sent us almost nothing. The published figures we had seen were small, such as Microsoft Clarity data showing AI referrals under 1% of visits across a large group of publisher sites, and nobody on our team had looked closely. Then we checked our GA4 for the last 90 days while researching this article. AI Assistant was the third largest channel on the site: 625 sessions from 360 users, out of 5,206 sessions in total.

That is about 12%, and we do not trust it yet. It is a small sample on a site that writes about AI tools and runs a free MCP connector, so our audience is unusual. A number that far from the benchmarks needs questions asked of it before it gets celebrated. But we would never have asked those questions if the channel had not been sitting there in plain sight. Yours may be too.

What GA4 now does without being asked

Until recently, the standard advice was to build a custom channel with a long regular expression. Much of what you will read online still says so. GA4's default channel group now includes an AI Assistant channel. Google describes it as traffic from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok, and it explicitly excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode.

So there are three separate kinds of "AI traffic", and they live in three separate places.

Finding it in four clicks

  1. In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Make sure the primary dimension is Session primary channel group, and set a date range of at least 90 days.
  3. Find the AI Assistant row. If nothing shows, you may have no such visits, or the volume may be very small.
  4. Change the dimension to Session source. You will now see each assistant's domain listed by name.

Then add Landing page as a secondary dimension. This is the step that turns a curiosity into something useful, because it shows you which of your pages the assistants are sending people to. Those pages are the ones AI systems already find worth citing. Look at what they have in common.

What to do if you need more control

The default channel cannot be edited, but you can create a custom channel group. Standard properties get 2 custom groups with up to 50 channels each, and custom groups can apply retroactively. Google's own example uses a "matches regex" condition listing assistant domains.

One rule matters more than any other here: the first matching channel wins. Place your AI channel above Referral, or the visits will be caught by Referral first. Custom groups are not available in the BigQuery export, so if your reporting depends on that you will need to rebuild the logic there.

For most small businesses, the default channel is enough. Leave the custom group until you have a specific question it answers.

Why the number is a floor, not a total

Picture someone asking an assistant for a recommendation on their phone. The answer names your company with no clickable link. They open a browser and type your name, or they search for it on Google. You have been recommended by an AI, and your reports will show either Direct or a branded organic search. Nothing in GA4 connects those events, and no setting will fix that.

Links that do pass a referrer can still be lost when an app opens them in a way that strips it. Vendor claims about how much goes missing vary, and we could not verify any of the percentages we found. So we will not quote one. You can reasonably say that the row in your report is the amount that could be proved, and the real figure is at least that.

Two signals help you see beyond the row:

  • Branded searches. A rise in non-paid brand queries in Search Console, with no campaign to explain it, is one possible sign of word of mouth from assistants or anywhere else.
  • Ask people. Add "How did you hear about us?" to your enquiry form, and include AI assistants as an option. It is low-tech, and it catches what analytics cannot.

Tracking Google's own AI answers

AI Overviews need a different tool. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Web search type of the Performance report, so those clicks and impressions are mixed into your normal numbers.

Since June 2026 Search Console also has generative AI performance reports, with a view of impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover by page, country, device and date. Google says it had rolled out to all websites by 31 August 2026. Some guides written before that still tell you Search Console cannot separate this data at all, so check the date on anything you read.

Google is clear that there are no extra requirements or special optimisations to appear in these features. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Measure the quality before the quantity

AI sessions are worth little if nobody does anything. Compare the AI Assistant row with Organic Search on engagement rate and on your key events. Our table shows 332 conversions for AI Assistant, and we will not quote that as a win. Those are mostly page visits wrongly marked as conversions, which is its own story. Clean your key events first, or this comparison means nothing.

Then keep AI crawlers apart from AI visitors. A bot collecting pages for a model is not a person reading your site. GA4 leaves out known bots, and server logs are where crawlers show up. If you want to influence what those crawlers find, our guide to llms.txt covers one option, and our AI Overviews guide covers the broader work.

What makes an AI assistant send you a visitor

No one outside these companies knows the full answer, and studies of cited sources disagree on the details. Several 2026 analyses found Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn among the most cited domains, which tells you that assistants lean on sources people already treat as references or real experience.

A small site cannot become Wikipedia. It can publish things that exist nowhere else. A clear answer near the top of the page helps, and so does original data with its method stated. We expect first-hand numbers like the ones in this article to do more for citation than another rewrite of a definition, though we are measuring that claim ourselves and have not proved it.

The row you have never looked at

Set yourself a monthly reminder to look at three things: the AI Assistant row, its top landing pages, and your generative AI impressions. The trend across six months will tell you far more than any industry benchmark, including ours.

ONE Dashboard shows your GA4 channels and Search Console data together with read-only access, and you can ask an AI assistant about them directly. There is something pleasing about asking Claude how much traffic Claude sent you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?

Open the Traffic acquisition report and look for the AI Assistant row in the default channel group. Google says this channel covers users arriving from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. Change the dimension to session source to see each assistant by name.

Does GA4 count Google AI Overviews as AI traffic?

No. Google excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode from the AI Assistant channel and counts those visits under Organic Search. To study them, use the generative AI performance reports in Search Console, which show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover.

Why is some AI traffic showing as Direct in GA4?

When a browser or app passes no referrer, GA4 has no way to know where the visit came from, so the session can land in Direct. Links copied out of an AI answer and pasted elsewhere behave the same way. Any AI figure in GA4 is therefore a minimum.

Do I need a custom channel group for AI traffic?

Usually not any more, since GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel. A custom group helps if you want assistants the default list misses or want different groupings. Standard properties get 2 custom groups, and the AI channel must sit above Referral, because the first matching rule wins.

How much website traffic comes from AI assistants?

Published figures are mostly small, such as under 1 percent of visits across one large group of publisher sites, and methods vary widely. Our own site was far higher at about 12 percent of sessions over 90 days, but a small site with a technical audience is not a benchmark. Check your own property.
